This video gives a brief explanation on where healthcare originated from and how services where invented to help people pay or their medical bills.
Healthcare has not always been around. Before the 1920's, healthcare did not exist. People would actually die from a
simple flu. Doctors didn't have enough knowledge on diseases to cure sick people. This is when employers decided to
provide healthcare insurance to help pay for the medical bills. Only few employers offered healthcare insurance. Most people paid out their pockets. For the treatments that began to surface, most people were treated in their house because there were no hospital settings. When doctors began to learn more about disease treatments, they began to charge more than people could afford. Once they stared bringing treatments into hospitals, the hospitals started raising prices even more for the use of technology enhancement. This was also the time of the Great Depression and only made matters worse. Since this was a time of depression and jobs were lost and the US basically had no money, Baylor hospital in Dallas created a system called "Blue Cross" to help people pay their hospital bills. Since hospital grew, people wanted healthcare from these hospitals. In the late 30's doctors gained something called "Blue Shield" insurance to protect their interest and payments. Other insurers saw Blue Cross Blue Shield as a success and that encouraged other insurers to provide healthcare in their benefit package for employment. It became common that employers included healthcare insurance and Governments provided tax incentives to do so. Then healthcare insurance took a big turn. Blue Cross use to charge everyone the same premium until private loans came into the picture. Private insurers started charging people for health insurance based on their age, gender, health status, and pre-existing medical problems. This is when it became harder for sicker people to get insured and easier for healthier people to get insured. From 1940 to 1960 the supply of healthcare insurance increased commercial insurance companies entered the market. The use of healthcare increased as medical technology became more sophisticated. The government encouraged employers to offer health insurance as a part of employee compensation packages.
Larger communities today are full of people of different size, r ace, sex, ethnicity etc. This is a main reason why it's important for people to have healthcare. A lot people have a different degree of medical problems. Having health insurance helps get people timely medical care and improves the lives and health. If people get health care immediately, then there is a better risk of better health in communities. Majority of minority communities lack healthcare insurance too. People who are uninsured have the worse health problems. For example if an uninsured person is diagnosed with cancer in an early stage, that person’s medical attention is slowly processed versus an insured person who would get immediate assistance. The uninsured person would lack care leading more medical problems with cancer which could possibly cause death. This is a major reason why people can’t get healthcare insurance. The lack of insurance is a fiscal burden for uninsured people and their families. This causes emotional problems for the people and their families. People that know they can’t receive healthcare causes stress. Stress is a leading cause in death and medical problems. Informing communities on possible healthcare coverage would make a change for the better in communities.
Mandatory healthcare coverage is a part of social justice. Social justice is the idea of creating a society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human right, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being. If some people in communities are not getting healthcare insurance and some are getting it then it is not equal. It shouldn’t matter about the sex, race medical problems, or amount of money people have. Healthcare is mandatory. Health is a life or death situation, if people don’t have coverage than these people have poor health. Poor health leads to poor communities and this is what communities are trying to prevent from happening.
Healthcare is a controversial issue because it affects only certain people. Millions of people are without healthcare because businesses do not pay for their healthcare or give them an adequate wage so they can pay for it themselves. People with good jobs or are very wealthy don’t look at healthcare as a big problem because they already have it. But the people who can’t afford healthcare are the ones that want to change it. This is not equality. Healthcare shouldn’t be based on money. The U.S wants to keep private insurance companies instead of National. The Obama healthcare act is based off private insurance only. If the people don’t receive these healthcare insurers then you have to pay a fine. The insurance limits you to certain doctors and may even have to pay certain money up front. National coverage is given by the Governments money and not out of people’s pockets. National healthcare insurance extends a line of care, regardless of social status and bank account. National healthcare reduces medical cost. But this also means higher taxes for the U.S. to pay. The Obama healthcare act is said to be reformed after National healthcare. So there are different pros and cons for each side. Healthcare must be mandatory for anyone. People should be able to receive it at any time and people can’t so healthcare is a revolving issue among everyone.
I hope to establish a clear position that equal healthcare coverage is mandatory for everyone. Healthcare systems need major reform because the cost of healthcare is rising faster than wages and is making healthcare too expensive for many, it is inhuman to deny help to those who cannot afford healthcare, and the insurers act randomly in proving coverage and denying treatments. If we make awareness of these issues to the communities in need of healthcare, this problem would be stopped. We need to take it to a higher power and get our communities involved. By doing this, we can fight for our right of healthcare.
